Friday, December 8, 2006, Monrovia, Liberia……The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Liberia will hold several Workshops and Town Hall Meetings on gender commencing on Monday, December 11, 2006. The Workshops and Town Hall meetings are intended to deliberate on varying topics that will lead to the development of the TRC’s policy document for addressing women’s issues at the TRC.

A release from the TRC Committee on Gender, and signed by the TRC Commissioner with oversight of women affairs, Massa A. Washington says, the workshops will be held in four (4) Counties, while the town hall meetings will be held in all fifteen (15) Counties of Liberia. The events will provide a working mechanism on how the TRC intends to deal with issues that are germane to women, and provide clarity on how the Commission intends to work with women participating in the TRC process.

The First Zonal Workshop will take place on Monday, December 11, 2006, at the St. Teresa’s Convent Pastoral Center on Randall Street, Monrovia. It will bring together participants from Bomi, Cape Mount and Montserrado Counties

The workshops and town hall meetings are made possible through funding from the Network Women’s Program of the Open Society Institute based in New York, USA. The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is also providing assistance to the Workshops and Town Hall meetings through their sponsorship of three (3) gender experts who will serve as major facilitators for all events. One of the expects is from East Timor, while the other is coming from Sierra Leone. The third is a local expert.

The Workshops and Town Hall Meetings are being organized by the TRC Committee on Gender which includes UNMIL, UNIFEM, the Women NGO, the Ministry of Gender and the TRC.
