The TRC commends Amnesty Internationals’ booklet (TRC press release)

The TRC commends Amnesty Internationals’ booklet “Liberia: A Brief Guide to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission” launched at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) headquarters in Monrovia on December 20, 2006. The guide describes the mandate and functions of the TRC and includes recommendations to the TRC and to the Liberian government.

The TRC takes note of the recommendations and is pleased to receive this worthy contribution from Amnesty International and sees it as a sign of positive partnership.

In its press release of the same day, Amnesty International recommended greater transparency and accountability in relation to work done and future work, as well as better communication with the donors to ensure the smooth functioning of the TRC.

The TRC appreciates Amnesty International’s comments, however, wishes to clarify that all of its functions borders on the principles of transparency, accountability, professionalism and straight adherent to the TRC Act. This is why financial reports are placed on the TRC website (www.trcofliberia.org). The TRC produces quarterly reports and distributes copies to all its partners. After the first quarter the TRC requested an audit of the UN. Eventually the Government of Liberia did the auditing.

The TRC encourages all of its partners and civil society to get directly involved in the process and is open to monitoring by them and welcomes questions about its activities.

Meanwhile the TRC announces that the appointment of Mr. Nathaniel T. Kwabo as Executive Director. Mr Kwabo’s appointment follows a rigorous screening and recruitment exercise of the TRC selection panel comprising UNDP, UNMIL, EU, ECOWAS, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Planning and LBDI. Nathaniel T. Kwabo is a Liberian veteran human rights activist. He holds a Masters degree in International Peace & Conflict Resolution and in International Relations. He was selected among 12 shortlisted candidates. The secretariat is completed by his appointment.
